An ICU Ventilator, also known as a respirator, is a machine that helps people who have difficulty breathing on their own. It works by pushing oxygen into the lungs and removing carbon dioxide from the body. A tube is attached to the machine and inserted into the patient’s mouth or nose, or via a surgically-made hole in the neck.
While on a ventilator, medicine may be used to keep the patient sedated and comfortable. Ventilators are used for life support in emergency situations, and can be used for a short time, like during surgery or after a sudden illness or injury. They are also used for long-term support if the patient is not able to breathe on their own. Alternatives to using a ventilator include a BiPAP mask, oxygen delivered through a tube in the nose or a mask over the mouth, and medicine to help with shortness of breath.
